2014 ATP World Tour facts for kids
The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour is the highest level of professional tennis tour for men. It's where the best male tennis players in the world compete! The 2014 ATP Tour was a busy year for tennis. It included four huge tournaments called Grand Slams. These are organized by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). There were also sixty-one regular tournaments. Other events included the Davis Cup (also by ITF) and the ATP World Tour Finals. The Hopman Cup was also part of the season, but it didn't give out ranking points. The 2014 season started on December 30, 2013, and finished on November 17, 2014.
Tennis games happen on a flat area called a tennis court. The size of a tennis court is set by the ITF. A court is about 23.78 meters (78.0 feet) long. For singles matches (one player against one player), it's 8.23 meters (27.0 feet) wide. For doubles matches (two players against two players), it's 10.97 meters (36.0 feet) wide. Tennis courts can be made from different materials. Each type of court plays a bit differently. The four main types are clay, hard, grass, and carpet courts. The ITF ranks them by how fast the ball bounces, from slow to fast.
