Steven Raichlen was born in Nagoya, Japan. He grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, in the United States.

In 1975, Steven Raichlen earned a college degree in French literature from Reed College. He received a special scholarship called the Thomas J. Watson Foundation Fellowship. This allowed him to study old cooking styles in Europe. He also trained at famous cooking schools in Paris, France, like Le Cordon Bleu.
