Stoke Fleming is a lovely village in Devon, England. It is part of the South Hams area. You can find it about one and a half miles south of the town of Dartmouth. The village is located at the top end of Start Bay, a beautiful coastal area. It is also inside the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which means it's a special place with amazing scenery.
In 2011, about 803 people lived in Stoke Fleming. The village has its own primary school, a library, and a football club.
History of Stoke Fleming
Stoke Fleming is a very old village. It was first written about in the Domesday Book. This was a huge survey of England ordered by William the Conqueror way back in 1085. The village was called Stoc then. The name le Flemeng was added later, around the year 1218.
St Peter's Church
The main church in the village is called St Peter's Church. Records show it had a priest, called a rector, as early as 1272. The church was made bigger in the 1300s. It also had a major update and repair in 1871 and 1872. This kind of work is often called a Victorian restoration.
Local Saint and Famous People
A local saint named Earmund of Stoke Fleming is thought to be buried here. He was a saint from Anglo-Saxon England. People in the village looked up to him as their special patron saint. Records show he was honored in 1364 and again in 1419.
A famous person named George Parker Bidder is also buried in the churchyard. He was known as "the Calculating Boy" because he was incredibly good at math in his head. Historically, Stoke Fleming was part of an older administrative area called the Coleridge hundred.
