River system Delaware River

Stoney Creek is a small river, also called a tributary, that flows into the bigger Delaware River. It is located in southeast Delaware County in Pennsylvania, United States.

The creek starts in Chester Township. It then flows through the City of Chester and Trainer. Sometimes, it even forms the border between these two places. Finally, it joins the Delaware River near the Port of Chester. Long ago, people also called it Middle Run or Stoney Run.

Crossing Stoney Creek

Many important roads and train lines cross over Stoney Creek. The creek even has a special train track named after it. This track is called the Stoney Creek Secondary. It helps move goods by train for different companies.

Another train line, the Philadelphia Subdivision, also crosses the creek. This line is part of a larger train network.

The Wilmington/Newark Line is a train line for people who travel to work or school. It is part of SEPTA's train system. This line also goes over Stoney Creek. It was built a long time ago and is now part of the Northeast Corridor.

Big highways also cross Stoney Creek. These include Interstate 95 (I-95) and U.S. Route 13.

Keeping the Creek Clean

Stoney Creek has faced challenges with pollution. In the past, a company called Stony Creek Technologies used to release water into the creek. Later, the land next to the creek was sold. Courts decided that new owners might need to help pay for cleaning up pollution that happened before they owned the land.

One area along the creek is known as the Metro Container site. This site is a Superfund Site. This means it is a place that needs special cleanup because of past pollution.

A large oil refinery in Trainer also uses the creek. This refinery sometimes releases water into the creek. There have been times when the amount of materials released was more than allowed. Efforts are made to manage and reduce these releases to protect the creek's environment.
