The Stono River is famous for the Stono Rebellion, which began on September 9, 1739. This was a major uprising by enslaved people, many of whom were from the Kingdom of Kongo in West Africa. It was the largest slave uprising in the British colonies in mainland America before the American Revolution. This event showed the strong desire for freedom among enslaved people.

Battle of Stono Ferry (1779)

During the American Revolution, the Stono River was the location of the Battle of Stono Ferry. This battle happened on June 20, 1779. It was an important fight between American and British forces in the southern colonies.

Role in the American Civil War (1861-1865)

The Stono River also played a part in the American Civil War. On January 30, 1863, soldiers from the Confederate side captured a Union steamer called the USS Isaac Smith. During this event, 8 Union soldiers died and 17 others were injured in the fighting.
