History of Stovall
Stovall got its name from the Stovall family. They owned the land where the local train station, called a railroad depot, was built. The community was located along the old Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad line.
Early Businesses and Post Office
In 1910, Stovall had two general stores where people could buy everyday items. The Stovall Gin Company also ran a cotton gin here. A cotton gin is a machine that separates cotton fibers from their seeds.
Even though Stovall is not an official town, it has its own ZIP code, which is 38614. The community's post office first opened in 1878 under the name Prarieville. It changed its name to Stovall in 1885 and has been known by that name ever since.
Music and Archaeology
Stovall is also known for its connection to music history. In 1941 and 1942, a music expert named Alan Lomax visited Stovall. He recorded the famous blues musician Muddy Waters (who was born McKinley Morganfield) playing music there.
The Carson Mounds are also found in Stovall. This is a very large archaeological site from the ancient Mississippian culture. Archaeologists study these mounds to learn about the people who lived there long ago.
