A Look Back at the Strawberry Islands' History
For thousands of years, different groups of indigenous peoples (the first people to live in an area) likely lived on these islands. Later, the historic Ojibwe people moved into the Great Lakes region. They sometimes had conflicts with other groups, like the Sioux (Lakota) people.
The Strawberry Islands and the nearby Strawberry Channel were once part of a disagreement. The states of Wisconsin and Michigan both claimed this area. This border dispute was finally settled in 1926 by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Discover the Four Strawberry Islands
There are four islands in the Strawberry Islands chain. Each one has its own name and features.
- Pirate Island is the most northern island. When the water is high, it's mostly just a rocky area covered by water.
- Jack Island is the next island to the south of Pirate Island.
- Little Strawberry Island is located south of Jack Island.
- Adventure Island is the largest island and is at the very southern end of the chain. Today, all the islands except Pirate Island are owned by private individuals or groups.
