Streeter is a small city in Stutsman County, North Dakota, United States. In 2020, about 149 people lived there. The city was started in 1905. In July 2005, Streeter had a big party to celebrate its 100th birthday!

Streeter is special because it's at one end of what many people call the straightest road in America. This road goes all the way to Hickson, North Dakota. It includes parts of Highway 30 and Highway 46.

History of Streeter

The area where Streeter is now had a post office called Bloomenfield starting in 1893. The town of Streeter itself was officially founded in the spring of 1905. This happened when land owned by Alex Anderson was divided into plots and sold. The first streets in Streeter were even named after Anderson's daughters, Frances and Florence.

The city was named after Darwin Reed Streeter. He was a well-known newspaper editor and lawmaker from Emmons County.

Early Challenges and Growth

On January 12, 1911, a big fire hit Streeter. It destroyed the city's bank, two general stores, and a drug store. But the community rebuilt.

Streeter officially became a city in 1950. Its first mayor was Oscar Seher. That year, the city's population reached its highest point with 602 people. Since then, the number of people living in Streeter has become much smaller.

In 1955, Streeter had many businesses. These included five churches, three general stores, a drug store, and a bank. There were also hardware stores, service stations, cafes, a hotel, and even a movie theater!

Centennial Celebration

Streeter celebrated its 100th birthday, or "Centennial," from July 1st to 3rd in 2005. The celebration was a big event! It included:

  • Class reunions for former students
  • A fun parade
  • Flea markets where people could buy unique items
  • Galleries showing old treasures

The celebration ended with a golf tournament and a church service. About 4,000 people came to the three-day event. This included 700 people who used to live in Streeter.
