A stromboli is a tasty baked dish. It's made from bread dough filled with different Italian cheeses. Usually, it has mozzarella cheese inside.
It often includes Italian cold cuts like salami or bresaola. Sometimes, it's filled with vegetables instead. Stromboli is served hot and is a popular Italian-American food.
It was first made in the Philadelphia area around the middle of the 20th century. The name "stromboli" comes from a volcanic island near Sicily, Italy.
A stromboli is a bit like a calzone or scaccia. People sometimes get them mixed up. Calzones are always folded into a half-moon shape. Strombolis, however, are usually rolled or folded into a cylinder. They might also have a thin layer of tomato sauce inside.
How to Make a Stromboli
Many pizza shops in America make strombolis using pizza dough. They fold the dough in half with the fillings inside. This makes it look similar to a half-moon-shaped calzone.
Other places make strombolis differently. They use a square piece of pizza dough. They can add any pizza toppings to it. Then, they roll it up like a jelly roll and bake it. Some variations even include pizza sauce or are deep-fried, like a panzerotto.
Where Did the Name "Stromboli" Come From?
There are a few stories about how the name "stromboli" was first used for this food in the United States.
Romano's Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria says they used the name first. This happened in 1950 in Essington, Pennsylvania. This town is just outside Philadelphia.
Nazzareno Romano, an Italian immigrant, was the owner. He was trying out "stuffed pizza," which is called pizza imbottita in Italian. He put ham, cotechino, cheese, and peppers inside a pocket of bread dough.
His future brother-in-law had an idea for the name. He suggested naming it after a movie that had just come out. The movie was called Stromboli. It was a very popular movie at the time.
