Early Settlers and the Sawmill
In 1840, a man named Joseph Stronach started clearing land in the township. He wanted to build a sawmill there. A year later, in 1841, Joseph's brother David Stronach and his son Adam Stronach arrived. They came by a type of sailing ship called a schooner. They brought machinery and about 15 workers with them to begin building the sawmill. This sawmill was very important for the early development of the area.

The settlement was first called "Paggeotville." It was renamed "Stronach" after John and Adam Stronach built their sawmill in 1841. A post office opened here in 1866. While it closed and reopened a few times, today the area gets its mail from the Manistee post office.
