The History of Stuart
In the late 1800s, this area was part of the Choctaw Nation in what was then called Hoyuby, Indian Territory. A post office, which is where mail is handled, opened in Hoyuby on June 23, 1892. John H. Elliott was the first person in charge of it.
The community started to grow after 1895. This was when the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad built a train line through Stuart. This line connected the town to bigger cities like McAlester and Oklahoma City. On April 14, 1896, the post office was renamed Stuart. This was done to honor Judge Charles Bingley Stuart from McAlester.
A hotel, known as the Stuart Hotel, was built by Berry Alexander "B. A." and Mary Youngblood Nunn. It is now a historic place. By 1909, people in Stuart had started Baptist, Christian, and Methodist churches. The town also had a bank, several general stores, places to fix metal (blacksmiths), lumberyards, and a cotton gin (a machine that separates cotton fibers from seeds). There were also places to rent horses and carriages (liveries).
Cotton was the main crop that farmers grew to sell. Royal C. Stuart, who was Judge Stuart's son, started his banking career at the Bank of Stuart. Later, the town had a second bank, a newspaper called the Stuart Chronicle, and a gristmill (which grinds grain into flour). Other early newspapers included the Stuart Educator, the Stuart Enterprise, and the Stuart Star.
In the 1930s, Stuart was a place where trains could stop to get water. The town also had a blacksmith, two cotton gins, and the Texas Pipe Line Company. By the 1940s and 1950s, both banks in Stuart had closed. People then had to travel to nearby towns like Holdenville or McAlester for their banking needs. However, grocery stores and gas stations continued to operate in Stuart.
