Stuart Hugh Loory was an American journalist and teacher. He was born on May 22, 1932, and passed away on January 16, 2015. Loory reported on many important events around the world during his career.

Early Life and Education

Stuart Loory was born in Wilson, Pennsylvania. He grew up in Dover, New Jersey, where his parents owned a furniture store. He went to Blair Academy for prep school.

In 1954, Loory graduated from Cornell University. While there, he was the main editor of the student newspaper, The Cornell Daily Sun. He later earned a Master's degree in journalism from Columbia University in 1958. He also studied more in Vienna, Austria.

Journalism Career

Stuart Loory had a long and exciting career in journalism. He worked for several major newspapers and later for television news.

Newspaper Reporting

Loory started working at the New York Herald Tribune in 1959. He was a reporter and a science writer. He also worked as a correspondent in Washington, D.C., and later in Moscow, Russia.

In 1966, he briefly worked for The New York Times. From 1967 to 1971, he was a White House correspondent for the Los Angeles Times. This meant he reported on the President and his activities.

Because of his reporting, President Nixon placed Loory on his "Enemies List." In 1971, Loory wrote about the costs of President Nixon's vacation homes. After this, he was not allowed to report from the White House anymore.

Broadcast News

After his newspaper work, Loory moved into broadcast journalism. In 1973, he became an executive editor for WNBC-TV news. He was also the first Kiplinger Professor of Public Affairs Reporting at Ohio State University.

In 1980, Stuart Loory joined Turner Broadcasting Systems and Cable News Network. He held many important roles at CNN. He was the managing editor of the Washington bureau and later the Moscow bureau chief. He also became a senior correspondent and an executive producer. From 1990 to 1991, he was the editor-in-chief of CNN World Report. He also served as a vice-president at CNN.

Academia and Teaching

After his long career in news, Stuart Loory became a teacher. In 1997, he became the first Lee Hills Chair in Free-Press Studies at the University of Missouri. He was also the editor of Global Journalist, a magazine for journalists worldwide. He also hosted a radio show called Global Journalist on KBIA-FM. Loory retired from the University of Missouri in 2010.

In 1995, Stuart married Nina Kudriavtseva. They lived in Brooklyn, New York. Nina travels to Moscow often for her work as artistic director of Benois De La Danse, an international ballet awards event.

Stuart had two grandchildren from his first son, Joshua: Matthew and Ilana. From his daughter Miriam, he had Leah, Joseph, Benjamin, and Jonathan. From his second marriage, he had two step-grandchildren: Kostya and Areseniy.

Stuart Loory passed away in Brooklyn, New York, on January 16, 2015.
