The Sturgeon River is a river in Ontario, Canada. It stretches about 177 kilometers (about 110 miles) long. This river starts near a place called Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater Provincial Park in the Timiskaming District. It then flows southeast through the Sudbury and Nipissing District areas. Finally, it empties into Lake Nipissing on the north shore. The town of Sturgeon Falls is located on the river, about 3 kilometers (2 miles) before it reaches the lake. Part of the northern area of the river is protected by the Sturgeon River Provincial Park.

A company called Ontario Power Generation runs a hydroelectric power plant on the river at Crystal Falls. This plant uses the river's water to make electricity. Long ago, from 1848 to 1879, a company called the Hudson's Bay Company had a fur trading post on this river. It was called Sturgeon River House. Up until the mid-1900s, the river was used to float logs down to sawmills on Lake Nipissing.

Exploring the Sturgeon River Parks

Parts of the upper Sturgeon River are included in the Sturgeon River Waterway Provincial Park. This park protects a wild area of about 33.5 square kilometers (13 square miles) along the river banks. It's a wilderness park, meaning there are no special visitor facilities like campsites or washrooms. Ontario Parks manages this park, helping to keep it natural and protected.
