Subgum is a tasty Chinese dish. Its name, "shí jǐn," means "ten brocades" in Chinese. This means it has many different ingredients, like a colorful picture made of brocade fabric.
This dish usually mixes different meats or seafood with lots of vegetables. Sometimes, it also includes noodles, rice, or even soup. Subgum comes from Cantonese cuisine, which is a style of cooking from the Guangdong province in China. You can often find Subgum on the menus of Chinese restaurants in North America.
Subgum in the United States
Subgum became popular in the United States a long time ago. One of the first times it was mentioned was in 1902. This was in a list of Chinese dishes in a newspaper called the Chicago Daily Tribune.
Later, in 1909, a restaurant in Chicago mentioned "sub gum deang." In 1913, a New York restaurant talked about "sub gum gai suey." These early mentions show how Subgum started to become a well-known dish in American Chinese restaurants.
