Early Life and Music Beginnings
Matthew Lambert was born in Adelaide, South Australia, on 6 May 1977. He grew up in Adelaide.
Suffa met his bandmate, MC Pressure, at Blackwood High School in the early 1990s. Together, they formed the group Hilltop Hoods. After releasing a demo and two albums, the band became very popular with their album The Calling in 2003.
Suffa's Music Production Work
Suffa also creates music for other artists. His first solo project was a collection of songs called Suffering City Vol. 1, released in 2002. This album featured different artists performing over the music Suffa created. Some artists who worked on Suffering City Vol. 1 included Muphin, Pegasus, DJ Bonez, and Reason.
Suffa believes that hip hop music sounds best when it's a bit "rough" and not too perfect. He likes to use samples from all kinds of music, not just the usual jazz or funk. He feels it's important to be creative and not worry too much about "rules" in music production.
After the Hilltop Hoods released their album Drinking from the Sun, Suffa produced a free collection of remixes called The Good Life in the Sun in 2012. This collection featured new versions of songs from Drinking from the Sun, like "Speaking in Tongues".
Suffa has also worked with other Australian musicians. In 2013, he collaborated with MC Drapht on a song called "Salute". Drapht also appeared on the Hilltop Hoods' seventh album, Walking Under Stars, on the track "Brainbox".
The Hilltop Hoods released Walking Under Stars in 2014. Suffa explained that this album was planned even before Drinking From the Sun and that they are like "companion pieces." He also produced a song called "Change My Way" for Adelaide MC K21 in 2014. Suffa has produced tracks for other groups like Funkoars and singer Kate Miller-Heidke.
Media Appearances
Suffa has appeared on television. In 2006, he was a guest on the ABC quiz show Spicks and Specks. He also appeared in a video with radio host Scott Dooley in 2009.
Supporting Good Causes
In 2007, Suffa worked with PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). He helped promote a campaign that focused on how chickens are treated on farms that supply meat to fast food restaurants.
Other Activities
In 2013, the Australian Government started a National Office for Live Music. Suffa was chosen to be the ambassador for South Australia. This office helps support live music events. Suffa believes that having a strong live music scene is very important, especially as digital music sales change.
Personal Life
In May 2012, Suffa shared that he was engaged to be married.
After the song "Cosby Sweater" was released, Suffa mentioned that he collects Coogi sweaters. These sweaters were made popular by hip hop artists like Biggie Smalls and Snoop Dogg. He finds them very comfortable!
In July 2016, Suffa and his wife welcomed their first child, a daughter.
