Sugar Creek (Ocmulgee River tributary) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sugar Creek is a stream in the U.S. state of Georgia. It's like a smaller river that flows into a bigger one, the Ocmulgee River. Sugar Creek travels through three different counties in Georgia: Wheeler County, Telfair County, and Dodge County.

Sugar Creek eventually meets another stream called Alligator Creek. This meeting point is about two miles north of a town called Lumber City. After they join, Alligator Creek continues its journey for several more miles until it flows into the Ocmulgee River.

Where Sugar Creek Flows

Sugar Creek is an important waterway for several towns and areas in Georgia. It crosses over Georgia State Route 87 and Georgia State Route 117 just before reaching the city of Eastman. The creek then flows along the southwest side of Eastman.

It also runs along the southwest border of the city of Chauncey. Further along its path, Sugar Creek passes through the southwest border of the city of McRae–Helena.

Understanding Sugar Creek's Size

Back in 1911, people did a survey to learn more about the area's waterways. They found out that Sugar Creek helps drain a large amount of land. Its watershed, which is the area of land where all the water drains into the creek, covers about 47.6 square miles in Telfair County and 49.2 square miles in Dodge County.

A smaller branch of Sugar Creek, called Turnpike Creek, also adds to this system. Turnpike Creek's watershed covers 59.2 square miles in Telfair County and 18.0 square miles in Dodge County. The survey also noted how much the creek drops in height over a certain distance, which helps show how fast the water might flow. For example, between McRae and a place called Gum Swamp, Sugar Creek drops about 5.41 feet for every mile it travels.
