Butte County is home to two places called Sugarloaf. Even though they share a name, they are different in size and location.

Sugarloaf Peak: A Smaller Hill

  • Sugarloaf Peak is more like a large hill. It rises about 550 feet (170 m) (about 168 meters) above the sea.
  • You can find it in the eastern part of the Sacramento Valley. It's located near the northern shore of the Feather River project's Thermalito Forebay, which is a part of the Oroville–Thermalito Complex.
  • This peak is northwest of the city of Oroville.

Sugarloaf: A Taller Mountain

  • The other mountain, simply called Sugarloaf (or sometimes Sugar Loaf), is much taller. It's a granite mountain that reaches about 1,600 feet (490 m) (about 488 meters) above sea level.
  • This mountain is about 15 miles (24 km) northeast of Sugarloaf Peak.
  • It sits in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.
  • You can find it near the town of Cherokee, west of Lake Oroville, and north of Oroville.
