A Look at Sumido's Past
Sumido has an interesting history, especially when we look at how Puerto Rico became part of the United States.
How Puerto Rico Joined the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War ended in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is a part of the U.S. but does not have all the same rights as a U.S. state.
Early Population Count
Soon after, in 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census in Puerto Rico. A census is like a big count of all the people living in an area. This first count showed that Sumido and a nearby barrio called Jájome Bajo had a combined population of 961 people.
