History of Summerfield
How Summerfield Got Its Name
Summerfield was officially planned and mapped out in 1827. It was named after John Summerfield, who was a local minister.
Early Settlers and Historic Sites
An early settler named Samuel Danford came to the Summerfield area in 1817. His old farm, called the Samuel Danford Farm, is now a special historical site. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

- James M. Tuttle - He was a general for the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was also a candidate for Governor of Iowa in 1863. James M. Tuttle was born in Summerfield.
