A Glimpse into Summertown's Past
Summertown got its name because it was first built as a place for people to visit in the summer. It was like a "summer retreat" where people could relax. In 1906, the Georgia General Assembly, which is Georgia's law-making group, officially made Summertown a town.
Where is Summertown?
Summertown is in the northern part of Emanuel County. You can find it at these coordinates: 32°44′48″N 82°16′34″W / 32.74667°N 82.27611°W. Georgia State Route 56 runs along the east side of the city. This road goes north about 5 miles (8 km) to Midville. It also goes south about 11 miles (18 km) to Swainsboro, which is the main town and government center for the county.
The United States Census Bureau says that Summertown covers a total area of about 0.79 square miles (2.0 square kilometers). Only a tiny part of this area, about 0.004 square miles (0.01 square kilometers), is water.
