History of Summerville
Summerville got its name from Summers Baldwin. He was the very first person to settle in this area. Before it was called Summerville, it had another name: 'Troy.' The town officially became a borough in 1887.
Geography of Summerville
Summerville is located in the western part of Jefferson County. It sits in the valley of Redbank Creek.
Pennsylvania Route 28, also known as Harrison Street, goes through the northern side of the town. This road leads northeast about 7 miles (11 km) to Brookville. Brookville is the main town, or county seat, for the county. The road also goes southwest about 12 miles (19 km) to New Bethlehem.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Summerville covers a total area of about 0.62 square miles (1.61 square kilometers). A small part of this area, about 0.02 square miles (0.06 square kilometers), is water.
