Sun Chunlan (Chinese: 孙春兰; born on May 24, 1950) is a retired Chinese politician. She was a very important leader in China's government. Until March 2023, she served as the second-ranked Vice Premier of China. This made her the highest-ranking woman in the Chinese government at that time. She was also a member of the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party, which is a top group of leaders.
Before becoming Vice Premier, Sun Chunlan held many important jobs. She was the leader of the city of Dalian. She also led the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, which helps workers. From 2009 to 2014, she was the top leader (Party Secretary) in two important regions: Fujian province and then Tianjin. Tianjin is one of China's four special cities that are managed directly by the central government. When she was in Fujian, she was only the second woman to be a provincial-level party chief in China's history. From 2014 to 2017, she led the United Front Work Department, a group that connects with different parts of society.

Early Life and Education
Sun Chunlan was born on May 24, 1950, in Raoyang County, Hebei province. In 1965, when she was 15, she started studying at the Anshan Industrial Technology Academy in Liaoning. She graduated in 1969 with a degree in mechanics.
After college, Sun worked at the Anshan Clock Factory, which made watches. She started on the factory floor and worked her way up. By 1971, she was part of the factory's Communist Party branch, helping to manage how the factory ran. She officially joined the Chinese Communist Party in May 1973. In 1974, she became the secretary for the Communist Youth League of China in Anshan City's Light Industry Bureau. Later, in 1977, she moved to the Anshan Textiles Factory and worked as a manager there until 1988. From 1988 to 1991, she was the head of the women's federation in Anshan.
Political Career
In 1990, Sun Chunlan began working for the provincial party leadership. This helped her move up in her career. She became the deputy head of the Workers’ Union of Liaoning in 1991. Then, in 1993, she became the head of the Women’s Association of Liaoning. By 1994, she was the head of the Workers’ Union of Liaoning, which is a big group for workers in the province. A year later, at age 45, she joined the Liaoning Chinese Communist Party Provincial Standing Committee. This was a big achievement for someone her age. In 1997, Sun was named the deputy party secretary of Liaoning. She also became the president of the provincial party school.
Leading Dalian City
In 2001, Sun Chunlan became the party secretary of Dalian. Dalian is a busy city on the coast. She held this important position from 2001 to 2005. After that, she moved to Beijing to work. In December 2005, Sun was named the Vice Chair of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU). This organization represents workers across China. She later became the First Secretary of the ACFTU Secretariat.
Party Secretary of Fujian
In December 2009, Sun Chunlan was chosen to be the party secretary of Fujian Province. This was a very important job. She was the first woman to hold such a high-level secretary position since Wan Shaofen in the 1980s. Being a provincial party chief is one of the most powerful jobs in China. Sun's role in Fujian was rare for a woman and showed she was ready for even bigger roles.
Party Secretary of Tianjin
After a big meeting called the 18th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party in November 2012, Sun became the party secretary of Tianjin. Tianjin is one of China's most important cities, managed directly by the central government. At that time, it was one of the richest provincial-level areas in China. As Party Secretary of Tianjin, Sun joined the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party. This is a very small and powerful group of top leaders. She was one of only two women in this group. She also became the first woman to be the party chief of a direct-controlled city in the history of the party.
Head of United Front Work
On December 31, 2014, Sun Chunlan was named the head of the United Front Work Department. This department works to connect with different groups and people both inside and outside China. Sun was the first head of this department to also be a member of the Politburo in a long time. Under her leadership, the department expanded its work to connect with even more groups.
Sun Chunlan was a member of the 19th Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party. She was also a member of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party multiple times, which is another important group of leaders.
Vice Premier of China
In October 2017, after the 19th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party, Sun was again chosen to be a member of the Politburo. In March 2018, Sun was appointed as a Vice Premier of China. This is one of the highest positions in the Chinese government.
During her time as Vice Premier, she was responsible for managing the anti-COVID measures during the 2022 Winter Olympics. For her work, she received the Gold Olympic Order after the games. The policies she oversaw during the COVID-19 pandemic led to many discussions among Chinese citizens.
Sun Chunlan retired from the Politburo after the 20th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party in October 2022. She then retired as Vice Premier in March 2023.
Post-Retirement Activities
After retiring from her government roles, Sun Chunlan became the president of the International Confucian Association on November 9, 2023.
