Early Life and Education
Sun Chunlan was born on May 24, 1950, in Raoyang County, Hebei province, China. In 1965, she started studying at the Anshan Industrial Technology Academy in Liaoning.
After finishing her studies in mechanics in 1969, Sun began working at the Anshan Clock Factory. She started on the factory floor. By 1971, she became part of the factory's Communist Party group, which helped manage how the factory ran. In May 1973, she officially joined the Chinese Communist Party.
In 1974, she became the secretary for the Communist Youth League of China in Anshan City's Light Industry Bureau. She then moved to the Anshan Textiles Factory in 1977. She worked there as a manager until 1988. From 1988 to 1991, she was the head of the women's federation in Anshan.
Political Career
In 1990, Sun Chunlan began working directly for the provincial party leaders. This helped her career grow even more. In 1991, she became the deputy head of the Workers' Union of Liaoning. By 1993, she was the head of the Women's Association of Liaoning.
In 1994, she became the head of the Workers' Union of Liaoning, which is the main trade union for the province. A year later, at age 45, she joined the Chinese Communist Party Provincial Standing Committee in Liaoning. This was a rare achievement for someone her age. In 1997, Sun was named the deputy party secretary of Liaoning. She also became the president of the provincial party school.
Leading Dalian City
In 2001, Sun Chunlan became the party secretary of Dalian, a busy coastal city. She held this important position from 2001 to 2005. After that, she moved to Beijing to work. In December 2005, Sun was named the Vice Chair of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU). She then became the First Secretary of the ACFTU Secretariat.
Party Chief of Fujian Province
In December 2009, Sun Chunlan was appointed the party secretary of Fujian Province. She was the first woman to hold such a high-level party secretary position since Wan Shaofen in the 1980s. Being a provincial party chief is one of the most powerful jobs in China. Sun's appointment to this "power position" was very unusual for a woman and set her up for even more important roles.
Party Chief of Tianjin City
After the 18th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party in November 2012, Sun became the party secretary of Tianjin. Tianjin was China's richest provincial-level area at that time. She took over from Zhang Gaoli, who became a member of the Politburo Standing Committee. As Party Secretary of Tianjin, Sun joined the top ranks of the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party. She was one of only two women in this group. She also became the first female party chief of a city directly controlled by the central government.
Leading the United Front Work Department
On December 31, 2014, Sun Chunlan was named the head of the Communist Party's United Front Work Department. This happened after the previous head, Ling Jihua, was removed from his position. Sun was the first United Front chief to also be a member of the Politburo since Ding Guangen.
Her old job in Tianjin was temporarily filled by Mayor Huang Xingguo. Under Sun's leadership, the scope of the United Front Work Department grew. In 2015, Wang Zhengwei was named deputy head of the department, working with Sun. This was unique because two very high-ranking leaders were in charge of the United Front.
Sun was a member of the 19th Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party. She was also a member of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party multiple times.
Becoming Vice Premier
In October 2017, after the 19th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party, Sun was again appointed as a member of the Politburo. In March 2018, Sun was given the important role of Vice Premier of China.
She received the Gold Olympic Order after the 2022 Winter Olympics. This was because she was in charge of managing the anti-COVID measures for the Olympic Winter Games. Sun Chunlan retired from the Politburo after the 20th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party. She retired as Vice Premier in March 2023.
After Retirement
On November 9, 2023, Sun Chunlan became the president of the International Confucian Association.
