Han Zheng (Chinese: 韩正; pinyin: Hán Zhèng; born 22 April 1954) is a Chinese politician. Since 2023, he has been the 11th Vice President of China. Before this, he was the top-ranked Vice Premier from 2018 to 2023. He was also a member of China's most important decision-making group, the Politburo Standing Committee, from 2017 to 2022.
Mr. Han served as the Mayor of Shanghai from 2003 to 2012. He then became the top leader of the Communist Party in Shanghai in 2012. In 2017, he joined the Politburo Standing Committee. In 2018, he became the first-ranked Vice Premier. In this role, he was in charge of matters related to Hong Kong and Macau.
After a major political meeting in October 2022, Mr. Han retired from the Politburo Standing Committee. In March 2023, he was chosen as the vice president of China. He is seen as a close advisor to President Xi Jinping. His role as Vice President often involves foreign affairs and diplomacy. For example, he represented China at the coronation of Charles III and Camilla in 2023. He also attended the second inauguration of Donald Trump in 2025.

Early Life and Education
Han Zheng was born in Shanghai, China, in April 1954. His family originally came from Cixi in Zhejiang province. When he was young, during a time called the Cultural Revolution, he worked on a farm in Chongming County, Shanghai.
Later, he worked at a company that installed lifting equipment. He also served in the Communist Youth League of China (CYLC) from 1975 to 1980. He officially joined the Chinese Communist Party in 1979.
He continued his education while working. He studied at Fudan University from 1983 to 1985. He also earned a degree in politics from East China Normal University between 1985 and 1987. Later, he earned a master's degree in international political economy from East China Normal University.
Career in Shanghai
Han Zheng held many important positions in Shanghai. In 1990, he joined the CYLC Shanghai Committee. He quickly rose to become its secretary in 1991. In 1992, he became the governor of Luwan District. During this time, he helped make Huaihai Road a popular shopping area. He also worked to improve the environment and create more green spaces in the district.
In 1995, he became a deputy secretary-general for the Shanghai government. He was also involved in city planning and managing securities. In 1997, he became a member of the top Communist Party group in Shanghai. In 1998, he was named Vice Mayor of Shanghai. In 2003, he became the Mayor of Shanghai.
In 2006, Han Zheng became the acting top Party leader in Shanghai. This happened after the previous leader, Chen Liangyu, was removed. Han served in this temporary role for five months. Then, Xi Jinping took over as Shanghai Party Secretary in 2007. Han worked with Mr. Xi, who later became Vice President and then President of China.
In November 2012, Han Zheng became the official Party Secretary of Shanghai. This is the highest political position in the city. He also joined the Politburo, a powerful group in the Communist Party.
First Vice Premier
In October 2017, Han Zheng was chosen to be a member of the 19th CCP Politburo Standing Committee. This is China's most important decision-making body. In March 2018, he was appointed as the first-ranked Vice Premier in the government led by Li Keqiang.
Role in Hong Kong Affairs
As Vice Premier, Han Zheng became the top leader for Hong Kong and Macau affairs in April 2018. He led the government's response to the 2019–2020 Hong Kong protests. He also oversaw changes to Hong Kong's election system in 2021. These changes were made to "prevent subversion," according to Han.
Vice President


In October 2022, Han Zheng retired from the Politburo Standing Committee. However, he was then elected as a representative to the 14th National People's Congress. On March 10, 2023, Han was elected as the vice president of China. He took over from Wang Qishan.
As Vice President, Han Zheng is considered the "number eight" in China's leadership. His role is mostly ceremonial, but he acts as an envoy and advisor to President Xi Jinping. He often takes part in diplomatic events.
For example, he represented President Xi at the coronation of Charles III and Camilla in May 2023. In August, he met with British foreign secretary James Cleverly in Beijing. He also gave a speech at the general debate of the seventy-eighth session of the United Nations General Assembly in September. That same month, he met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. In October, he attended the inauguration of Prabowo Subianto as the president of Indonesia.
In May 2024, Han Zheng met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Harbin. They both attended the opening of the 8th China-Russia expo. On October 10, he became the honorary president of the Red Cross Society of China. He also attended the second inauguration of Donald Trump in January 2025. This was the first time a high-ranking Chinese official attended a US presidential inauguration. His presence showed China's interest in improving China–United States relations.
Family Life
Han Zheng is married to Wang Ming. She has reportedly served as a vice chair of the Shanghai Charity Foundation. They have one daughter.
