The Clinus superciliosus, also known as the Super klipfish or Highfin klipfish, is a type of fish found in the ocean. It belongs to a family of fish called clinids. You can find this fish in the warmer, subtropical parts of the Atlantic Ocean. Its home stretches from northern Namibia all the way down to the Kei River in South Africa.
These fish live in areas where the ocean meets the land, like subtidal zones (always under water) and intertidal zones (where the water goes in and out with the tides). The Super klipfish can grow up to 30 centimetres (12 in) long. It eats many different things that live on the ocean floor, such as tiny crustaceans (like amphipods, isopods, and crabs), sea urchins, snails (called gastropods), polychaete worms, and even other small fish.

What Does the Super Klipfish Look Like?
The Super klipfish is a strong fish that can grow up to 30 centimeters (about 12 inches) long. It's a bit flat from side to side.
Special Features of Males and Females
- Males: Have a tall fin on their back (called a dorsal crest). The first three spines of this fin are very tall, and then there's a dip in the fin's skin.
- Females: Have a shorter, more rounded fin on their back.
Head and Body Details
The Super klipfish has a big, pointed head with a large mouth and thick lips. Above its eyes, it has special feathery growths called cirri. These can be simple or very bushy on older fish.
Amazing Color Changes
This fish is famous for its incredible range of colors! It can be:
- White
- Yellow
- Orange
- Red
- Brown
- Dark green
Often, you'll see a dark spot on the upper part of its gill cover (called the operculum).
Body Patterns
Super klipfish can have a few different patterns on their bodies:
- No pattern: The fish is mostly one color.
- White band: A wide white stripe runs from behind its eye, across its gill cover, and tapers towards its tail. This stripe can be solid or broken.
- Mottled: The fish has many vertical and horizontal stripes and bands, making it look patchy.
Its head can also have different patterns, from wide slanted stripes to a complex net-like design. The eyes often have wide stripes radiating out from them, matching the fish's body color, or they might have red or yellow irises. Its pectoral fins (the ones on its sides) are usually the same color as its body, with clear skin between the fin rays.
Where Do Super Klipfish Live?
You can find the Super klipfish along the coast from Namibia down to beyond East London in South Africa.
Their Homes in the Ocean
These fish live in:
- Rock pools
- Deeper waters, sometimes as deep as 50 meters (about 164 feet)
They often choose habitats that match their color, which helps them hide from predators. For example:
- Pale fish prefer sandy areas.
- Light green fish like beds of Caulerpa (a type of green seaweed).
- Dark green fish hide among Codium (another green seaweed).
- Red fish live among red algae.
How Scientists Classify the Super Klipfish
Scientists use a system called taxonomy to group living things. Some scientists think that Clinus superciliosus might actually be a group of very similar species, not just one. This group could include the current Super klipfish, C. arborescens, and C. ornatus. Also, two new species, C. exasperatus and C. musaicus, were described in 2012. Different scientific databases, like Fishbase and the Catalog of Fishes, sometimes have slightly different ways of classifying these fish.
