Surendra Nath was an Indian cricketer. He was born on January 4, 1937, and passed away on May 5, 2012. He played in 11 Test matches for India between 1958 and 1961. Surendra was mainly a medium-fast bowler. He was very good at making the ball swing. He had a great tour of England in 1959.

Surendra Nath's Cricket Journey

Surendra Nath was an officer in the army. He played domestic cricket for the Services team. His career lasted from 1955 to 1969.

Becoming a National Player

Surendra became well-known in 1958. He played for Services against the West Indies. In that match, he took out the first three West Indian batsmen. After this, he took 6 wickets for only 10 runs against Patiala. These great performances led to him being chosen for the Third Test match.

Early Test Matches

In his first Test, he took 2 wickets. He was the only Indian bowler to take more than one wicket. Then, he had an amazing game against Railways. He took 7 wickets for 14 runs and later 6 wickets for 62 runs. Because of this, he kept his spot for the Fourth Test. However, he did not take any wickets in that game. He then lost his place for the Fifth Test.

Success in England (1959)

Surendra Nath went on a tour to England in 1959. He was the opening bowler with Ramakant Desai in all five Test matches. He took 16 wickets during this tour. This was the best average among all Indian bowlers.

Key Performances in England

In the Fourth Test, he took 5 wickets for 115 runs. In the Fifth Test, he took 5 wickets for 75 runs. This was England's only innings in that match. He also scored his highest Test score of 27 runs. He and Naren Tamhane added 58 runs together. This helped India after they were struggling at 74 runs for 7 wickets.

Wisden, a famous cricket book, noted his strength. They said he bowled many long spells. However, they also suggested he should aim more at the off-stump.

Later Career and Comebacks

Surendra played in the first two Tests against Australia in 1959-60. But he only took two wickets. So, he was not chosen for the Test team again for a while.

Returning to the Test Team

In December 1960, he took 6 wickets for 34 runs against Delhi. This helped his team win quickly. After this great performance, he returned to the Test team. He played in the Third and Fourth Tests against Pakistan in 1960-61. In the Third Test, he took 4 wickets for 93 runs. He again opened the bowling with Desai. But he only took two more wickets in the next three innings. He then lost his spot in the team again.

First-Class Century and Final Years

In 1961-62, he scored his only century in first-class cricket. He made 119 runs against Southern Punjab. He also took 22 wickets that season. However, he could not get back into the Test team.

He played less often after that. But in 1967-68, he had a strong season. He took 25 wickets in five Ranji Trophy matches. This helped Services reach the semi-finals. In one important match, he took 7 wickets for 59 runs. This helped his team win and move forward in the tournament.
