One story says she was inspired after visiting the set of a children's TV show called Crackerjack. However, Susanna herself wrote that the idea came after her father took her to see the movie Doctor Dolittle. After seeing that film, she knew she wanted a camera.

She later studied English at Oxford University. Then, she won a special scholarship called a Fulbright scholarship. This allowed her to study film at UCLA in the United States.
