Early Life and Family
Sushil Koirala was born on August 12, 1939, in Biratnagar, Nepal. His parents were Bodh Prasad and Kumudini Koirala.
He came from the well-known Koirala family, which had many politicians. His cousins, Matrika Prasad Koirala, Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala, and Girija Prasad Koirala, also became prime ministers of Nepal.
Political Journey
Sushil Koirala started his political career in 1954. He was inspired by the ideas of the Nepali Congress party, which believed in social democracy.
Early Activism
In 1958, he took part in the Bhadra Abagya Aandalon, a Civil Disobedience Movement. This movement was organized by the Nepali Congress. He also worked hard for democratic elections in 1959.
These elections led to Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala becoming Nepal's first elected prime minister. However, in December 1960, King Mahendra took over the government. This forced many Nepali Congress members, including Sushil Koirala, to live in exile in India for 16 years.
During his time in exile, Koirala was the editor of Tarun, the official newspaper of his party. He even spent three years in Indian prisons for his involvement in a plane hijacking in 1973.
Rising Through the Ranks
Koirala became a member of the party's Central Working Committee in 1979. He was later made General Secretary in 1996 and Vice President in 1998.
In 2008, he became the acting president of the Nepali Congress. Then, on September 22, 2010, he was officially elected as the party president.
Becoming Prime Minister
Under Koirala's leadership, the Nepali Congress became the largest party in the 2013 Constituent Assembly elections. He was chosen as the leader of the Congress's group in parliament.
On February 10, 2014, he was nominated as the Prime Minister by the Constituent Assembly.
Key Achievements and Challenges
During his time as prime minister, Nepal faced a major earthquake in April 2015. His government was criticized for its slow response to the disaster.
However, a very important event happened that year. The four main political parties in Nepal reached a historic agreement. This agreement led to the creation of a new constitution for the country. Because of his big role in this, Sushil Koirala is sometimes called the "Father of the Constitution."
He had promised to step down as prime minister once the new constitution was in place. So, he resigned on October 10, 2015. He tried to be re-elected but lost to KP Sharma Oli.
Electoral History
Sushil Koirala was elected to the Pratinidhi Sabha (House of Representatives) from the Banke–2 area in 1991 and 1999. He did not win the election in 1994.
In the 2008 election for the Constituent Assembly, he lost in the Banke–3 area. However, in the 2013 Constituent Assembly election, he won from both Banke–3 and Chitwan–4. He later chose to represent Banke–3.
Personal Life
Sushil Koirala never married and was known for living a simple life. His friends and supporters often called him Sushil daa, which is a loving nickname.
He was believed to have a college degree, but he always said he only had informal education.
