Dr. Susmita Mohanty was born in 1971. She is an amazing Indian spaceship designer and a business leader in the space industry. She also works to protect our planet from climate change.
Susmita is famous for her deep research into space topics. In 2009, she helped start Earth2Orbit, which was India's very first private space company. She is the only person in the world to have started space companies on three different continents: Asia, Europe, and North America. She has even visited both the Arctic and Antarctica!
Early Life and Education
Susmita Mohanty was born in Cuttack, India. She grew up in Ahmedabad. Her father, Nilamani Mohanty, was a scientist who worked for ISRO (India's space agency). He greatly inspired her to get involved in space research.
She studied electrical engineering at Gujarat University. Later, she earned a master's degree in Industrial Design from the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad. She also completed another master's degree in Space Studies from the International Space University in Strasbourg.
A Career in Space
Susmita Mohanty began her journey as a space entrepreneur in 2001. She co-founded Moonfront, a company that gave advice on aerospace projects. This company was based in San Francisco.
In 2004, she also helped start Liquifer System Group (LSG). This company, located in Vienna, Austria, focused on designing things for space, like habitats and equipment. For over ten years, while living in California, she was an important member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Aerospace Architecture. This group works on designing spacecraft and space structures.
Awards and Recognition
Susmita Mohanty has received many honors for her work. In 2005, she won the International Achievement Award. This award recognized her efforts to encourage teamwork between different countries.
In 2012, the Financial Times magazine named her one of the "25 Indians to Watch." This meant she was seen as a rising star in India. In 2017, she was even featured on the front cover of Fortune magazine, which is a big deal for business leaders.
From 2016 to 2019, she was chosen to be part of the World Economic Forum's Global Future Council for Space Technologies. This group helps guide the future of space exploration. In 2019, the BBC included her in their list of 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world. This shows how much impact she has had globally.
