Svensen is a small community in Clatsop County, Oregon, United States. It is located right on the Columbia River. Svensen is known as an "unincorporated community" and a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means it is a recognized area where people live, but it does not have its own city government. The community was named after an early settler, Peter Svensen.
From 1895 to 1944, Svensen had its own post office. After it closed, mail service for Svensen began to be delivered by rural carriers from the Astoria, Oregon post office. Students in Svensen attend schools within the Knappa School District.
A Look at Svensen's History
Svensen is located on the south side of the Columbia River. Svensen Island is nearby, separated by a waterway called Svensen Slough. This area is about 24 miles up the river from its mouth.
Did you know that the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition visited this very spot? On November 26, 1805, Lewis and Clark and their team camped here. They were on their way to set up their winter camp at Fort Clatsop. They passed through the area again on March 24, 1806, as they began their journey back home.
