Swamp Creek is a stream in northern Wisconsin, USA. It flows into the Flambeau River. A stream that flows into a larger river is called a tributary. The Flambeau River then flows into the Chippewa River.

Swamp Creek is special because it is the largest of 23 streams that feed into the Flambeau River. It is also one of the few streams there that has a dam. Many of the smaller streams flowing into the Flambeau River are home to trout fish.

Where is Swamp Creek?

The Flambeau River starts from two main branches: the North Fork and the South Fork. Swamp Creek is found in the area drained by the North Fork. This area is called a watershed.

North Fork Watershed

The North Fork watershed is located near the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage in Iron County. Besides Swamp Creek, there are three other named creeks in this watershed. These are Bosner Creek, Smith Creek, and Sixmile Creek.

Forest Wander Lake 17

A place called Forest Wander Lake 17 is a 39-acre lake in Iron County. This lake was created by building a dam on Swamp Creek. When a dam holds back water to form a lake, that lake is called an impoundment.

Trout in Swamp Creek

Most of Swamp Creek is known as a Class II Trout Stream. This means it's a good place for trout to live.

What is a Class II Trout Stream?

In Class II trout streams, some trout are born naturally. However, there aren't enough natural trout to use all the available food and space. So, fish are added to the stream by people. This is called "stocking." Stocking helps keep enough fish for people who like to fish.

These streams are good for trout because adult trout can survive well there. They often grow larger than average-sized trout. In Wisconsin, there are over 5,900 miles of Class II trout streams. They make up almost half of all the trout streams in the state.
