Swan Creek (White River tributary) facts for kids
Swan Creek is a small river, also called a stream, located in the beautiful Ozarks region of southern Missouri. It's like a smaller helper river that flows into a much larger one called the White River. This happens after the White River passes the Lake Taneycomo dam.
Where Swan Creek Starts and Flows
Swan Creek begins its journey in the northwest part of Douglas County. Its starting point, or "headwaters," is high up, about 1,640 feet above sea level. You can find this spot near where two roads, Missouri Route 14 and Missouri Route AK, meet. The exact location is 37°01′01″N 92°48′55″W / 37.01694°N 92.81528°W.
From there, the stream generally flows towards the west. It passes by a small place called Ongo and goes near Honey Branch Cave. Soon after, it leaves Douglas County.
The creek then enters Christian County. It continues flowing southwest, passing through areas like Keltner. After a while, it turns south, flowing east of Chadwick.
As it moves south, Swan Creek goes under Missouri Route 125 near Garrison. It then turns southwest again and is crossed by Missouri Route AA close to the community of Swan.
The stream keeps winding its way south-southwest. It creates many curves and bends, which are called "meanders." Finally, Swan Creek reaches its end, joining the White River. This meeting point is just east of Forsyth at a spot known as Shadow Rock Park. The coordinates for its end are 36°40′57″N 93°06′20″W / 36.68250°N 93.10556°W.
History of the Name
The name "Swan Creek" comes from a local family who lived in the area a long time ago. They were known as the Swan family.
