Swan Quarter is a small community in Hyde County, North Carolina, in the United States. It is also known as Swanquarter. This community is the main town for Hyde County, which means it's the county seat. In 2020, about 275 people lived here.

Where is Swan Quarter Located?
Swan Quarter is in the western part of Hyde County. It sits right on Swanquarter Bay, which is an inlet of the larger Pamlico Sound. The land here is very flat, only about 3 feet (1 meter) above sea level.
U.S. Route 264 runs along the northern edge of Swan Quarter. This road can take you about 69 miles (111 km) east to Manteo or 51 miles (82 km) west to Washington.
The total area of Swan Quarter is about 3.9 square miles (10.2 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with only a tiny bit of water.

In 2020, there were 275 people living in Swan Quarter. Most of the people were White (about 71.6%). About 20% were Black or African American. A small number of people were of other races or mixed races (2.18%), and about 6.18% were Hispanic or Latino.
History of Swan Quarter
In the 1700s, a person named Samuel Swann settled near Pamlico Sound. His settlement was first called "Swann's Quarter." Over time, the name was shortened to Swan Quarter. In 1836, it officially became the main town, or county seat, for Hyde County.
Two important buildings in Swan Quarter are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the Hyde County Courthouse and the Lake Mattamuskeet Pump Station, which is also known as Mattamuskeet Lodge.
Getting Around
A special ferry connects Swan Quarter to Ocracoke Island. This ferry can carry up to 50 cars and takes about two and a half hours to cross Pamlico Sound. It's a fun way to travel across the water!
Wildlife and Nature
Just 9 miles (14 km) east of Swan Quarter, you'll find the Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge. This large area is a safe home for many animals. It's especially important for birds that travel long distances, like ducks and geese.
You might also spot endangered animals here, such as bald eagles, peregrine falcons, and American alligators. The refuge also offers fun activities like wildlife watching and learning about nature. It covers a huge area of about 50,180 acres (203 square kilometers).
Education
The main school for children in Swan Quarter is Mattamuskeet School. It is part of the Hyde County Schools system.
In the past, schools in the United States were separated by race. For Black students in Swan Quarter, the grade school was O. A. Peay School. Black high school students went to Hyde County Training School in Sladesville. White students went to West Hyde School. Today, all students attend Mattamuskeet School.
