The Swisshelm Mountains are a small mountain range located in Arizona, USA. They are found in the eastern part of Cochise County. These mountains are right next to the southwest corner of the Chiricahua Mountains.

The Swisshelm Mountains are separated from the Pedregosa Mountains to the southeast. They are also bordered by Leslie Creek to the south and east. This area is now well-known for the Leslie Canyon National Wildlife Refuge. The mountain range is named after John Swisshelm, a miner and local settler from the late 1800s.

Swisshelm Mountains: A Closer Look

The Swisshelm Mountains run from north to south. They have three important peaks. The highest point is Swisshelm Mountain in the south. It stands tall at 7,185 feet (2,190 m).

In the northern part of the range, there is an unnamed peak. It is about 5,225 feet high. This peak is close to Whitewater Draw, which is part of Rucker Creek. Another unnamed peak is in the northeast. It is about 5,847 feet high and also near Rucker Creek.

Where Are They Located?

Leslie Creek forms the eastern and southern edges of the Swisshelm Mountains. The Chiricahua Mountains are directly to the east. The Pedregosa Mountains are to the southeast. A smaller stream called Big Bend Creek, which flows into Leslie Creek, drains the Pedregosa Mountains.

Nearby Towns and Areas

The towns of Elfrida and McNeal are directly west of the Swisshelm Mountains. They are located in the Sulphur Springs Valley. The cities of Douglas in Arizona and Agua Prieta, Sonora in Mexico are about 15 miles (24 km) to the south. The historic area of Sunizona, Arizona is to the northwest.
