Sybil Henley Jacobson (born July 21, 1881, in London, England; died November 4, 1953, near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) was a talented Canadian painter. She created beautiful oil and watercolor paintings. Her art often showed prairie landscapes, people's faces (portraits), and everyday objects (still life).

Sybil Jacobson's paintings are mostly owned by private collectors. However, you can also find her work in important art places. These include the Norman Mackenzie Art Gallery, the Moose Jaw Art Museum, and Nutana Collegiate. In 1929, she helped start the Women's Art Association of Saskatchewan. She was one of the ten founding members of this group.

About Sybil's Life

Sybil Jacobson was born to Edward and Lucy Atkinson. She grew up with two sisters and one brother. In 1912, she moved to Saskatchewan, Canada, to start a farm.

In 1914, Sybil married Peter Henley, a sculptor she had met in Paris. Sadly, Peter passed away just two years later. Later, in 1935, Sybil married Dr. Johann Sigurdir Jacobson. He also passed away a year later in 1936. Sybil had two children: Johanna, born in 1919, and Jacob, born in 1921. Her family lived in different places like Moose Jaw, Lac Vert Nord, and Winnipeg. They finally moved to Vancouver in 1936.

Her Art Education and Work

Sybil Jacobson loved art and studied it for many years. She attended the Hastings and St. Leonard's Municipal School of Science. She also studied at the Lambeth School of Science and Art. Both of these schools were in London, England.

For three years, she studied at the Royal Academy Schools in London. There, she learned from famous artists like John Singer Sargent. Other masters who guided her included Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Sir George Clausen, Ernest Crofts, and Sir Frank Dicksee.

After her studies, Sybil became an art teacher. She taught in Saskatoon in 1925 and in Lac Vert Nord. From 1937 to 1938, she taught at the Canadian Institute of Associated Arts in Vancouver, B.C.. In 1932, she opened her own art studio in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
