Sydney Joy Romero (born March 8, 1997) is an amazing Mexican American professional softball player. She is also an assistant coach for the Oregon Ducks team.
Sydney used to play college softball for the Oklahoma Sooners. She set many team records there. She also helped the Sooners reach the Women's College World Series four times in a row, from 2016 to 2019. She even won the national championship twice, in 2016 and 2017! After college, she played professionally for the USSSA Pride. She also played for the Mexican national team at the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Early Life
Sydney Romero grew up in California. She went to Vista Murrieta High School. There, she was a top player, earning "First-Team All-Southwestern League" honors three times. She was also named an "Underclass All-American" in 2014.
College Softball Star
Sydney started her college career in 2016 as a freshman. She played in 64 games and was very hard to strike out. This set a record for the Oklahoma Sooners team! She was named to the All-Big 12 Freshman Team. She was also a finalist for the NFCA Freshman of the Year award.
During the 2016 Women's College World Series, Sydney's Sooners played against her older sister Sierra and the Michigan Wolverines. Sydney hit a home run and helped her team win 7-5. In the finals against Auburn, Sydney hit another big home run. This helped the Sooners win the championship!
In her senior year in 2019, Sydney was one of the best players in the Big 12 Conference. She led the conference in many areas, like how often she hit the ball (batting average) and how many home runs she hit. She also had a lot of RBIs (runs batted in). She set a new Sooners team record for doubles (hits where she reached second base).
Because of her amazing season, she was named the Big 12 Player of the Year. She was also a top finalist for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award.
