Sälen (pronounced [sæːlen]) is a small town in Sweden. It is located in the Malung-Sälen Municipality in Dalarna County. In 2010, about 652 people lived there.
Even though Sälen is small, many tourists visit it every winter. It is famous for its amazing ski areas. It is also the starting point for a very old and big ski race.

Skiing and Winter Sports
Sälen is a popular place for winter sports. It has seven different ski resorts. People come here to enjoy both downhill skiing and cross-country skiing.
Famous Ski Resorts
The oldest ski resort in Sälen is called Högfjällshotellet. It was built in 1937 and is still a favorite spot. People love it for relaxing, cross-country skiing, and downhill skiing.
Newer resorts like Hundfjället and Stöten have steeper mountains. Other popular resorts include Lindvallen, Näsfjället, Tandådalen, and Kläppen.
SkiStar Resorts
Today, four of the resorts are run by the Skistar company. These are Lindvallen, Högfjället, Tandådalen, and Hundfjället. Lindvallen and Högfjället are connected by ski lifts. Tandådalen and Hundfjället are also connected. The mountains here can be up to 350 meters (about 1,150 feet) high.
Vasaloppet Ski Race
Sälen is well-known for hosting the start of the Vasaloppet. This is the oldest and largest cross-country ski race in the world. It began in 1922. More than 15,000 people take part in the main race each year.
Getting to Sälen
It is easy to travel to Sälen, especially for winter sports. There are a few airports nearby.
Local Airports
The closest airport is Scandinavian Mountains Airport. It opened in December 2019. Another airport, Mora Airport, is about 100 kilometers (62 miles) away. You can take a bus from Mora to Sälen.
International Travel
If you are coming from another country, the nearest big airport is Oslo Airport. It is in Norway, about 220 kilometers (137 miles) from Sälen.

U2 Music Video
The famous rock band U2 filmed a music video in Sälen. It was for their song "New Year's Day." They filmed it on December 15, 1982.
Sälen's Climate
Sälen has a cold climate, especially in winter. It is known as a subarctic climate (Dfc). This means it has long, cold winters and short, cool summers.
