Thomas Cuthbert Worsley (1907–1977) was a British teacher, writer, editor, and theatre and television critic. He is best known for his book Flannelled Fool: A Slice of a Life in the Thirties, which tells parts of his own life story.

About Cuthbert Worsley

Cuthbert Worsley was born on 10 December 1907 in Durham. His father was an Anglican clergyman. Cuthbert was the third of four sons and also had one sister.

His father was a Doctor of Divinity and a brave soldier who won the Military Cross. He was also a very keen sportsman. He later became the Dean of Llandaff Cathedral. Cuthbert's father left the family when Cuthbert was at university.

His Education

Cuthbert first went to the Llandaff Cathedral school. He then moved to Brightlands preparatory school. From there, he won two scholarships to Marlborough College.

While he was home from Marlborough for a summer holiday, Cuthbert's younger brother, Benjamin, sadly drowned at the seaside. This was a very difficult and sad event for Cuthbert. He felt a lot of guilt and sadness about it for many years.

At Marlborough, Cuthbert studied Classical subjects. He then won a scholarship to St John's College at Cambridge University. He first studied Classics there, but then changed to English. He graduated in 1929.

Cuthbert was a successful cricketer throughout his school and university years. His skill in sports helped him get a job right after graduating.

His Career

In 1929, Cuthbert became a schoolmaster at Wellington College. His book Flannelled Fool shares stories about his time there.

With Stephen Spender, he went to Spain during the Spanish Civil War. Some of his experiences from this time were written about later in his book Fellow Travellers.

His book The End of the Old School Tie was published in 1941. It was part of a book series edited by Tosco Fyvel and George Orwell.

Cuthbert later worked for the left-wing magazine New Statesman. He was an assistant editor and a drama critic there. In 1958, he started working for the Financial Times as a theatre and television critic.

Cuthbert Worsley died on 23 February 1977 in Kemp Town, Brighton.
