Taarak Janubhai Mehta (born December 26, 1929 – died March 1, 2017) was a famous Indian writer. He was known for his funny articles, plays, and columns. He is most famous for his weekly column called Duniya Ne Undha Chasma. This column was very popular and made him a well-known person in Gujarati theatre.

His humorous weekly column first appeared in a magazine called Chitralekha in March 1971. In this column, he looked at everyday topics from a funny and different point of view. Throughout his career, he wrote and published 80 books.

In 2008, a popular Indian TV channel, SAB TV, started a comedy show based on his column. The show is called Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. It quickly became one of the channel's most popular shows. Actor Shailesh Lodha played the role of Taarak Mehta in the show until September 2022. Now, actor Sachin Shroff plays the character.

About Taarak Mehta's Life

Taarak Mehta belonged to the Gujarati Nagar Brahmin community. He lived in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, with his second wife, Indu. They were married for over 30 years. His first wife, Ila, also lived in the same apartment building. Taarak Mehta had a daughter named Eshani from his first marriage. Eshani lives in the United States and has two children, Kushaan and Shailee.

Taarak Mehta passed away on March 1, 2017, at the age of 87. He had been ill for some time. After his passing, his family generously donated his body for medical research.

Taarak Mehta received many important awards for his writing. In 2015, he was given the Padma Shri. This is the fourth highest award a civilian can receive in India. The Gujarat Sahitya Akademi honored him with the Sahitya Gaurav Puraskar in 2011. After his death, in 2017, he was also awarded the Ramanlal Nilkanth Hasya Paritoshik.
