Tabernash is a small community in Grand County, Colorado, in the United States. It's known as an unincorporated town, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city does. It also has a post office and is a census-designated place (CDP). This means the United States Census Bureau counts its population for official records. In 2020, about 401 people lived in Tabernash.

History of Tabernash

The Tabernash Post Office first opened its doors in 1905. The name "Tabernash" comes from a Ute Indian person. The Ute are a Native American tribe.

1984 Airplane Crash Near Tabernash

On August 10, 1984, a small plane, a Cessna L-19 Bird Dog, crashed in a forest close to Tabernash. The pilot, James Jeb Caddell, was flying from Granby, Colorado, to Jeffco Airport.

The plane's wreckage was not found until three years later, on August 23, 1987, by people hiking in the area. They also found a video camera that had been recording during the flight. The tape was badly damaged.

A local deputy sheriff, Dale Wood, managed to fix the tape. The video showed that the pilot had trouble because of the air conditions that day. The plane could not climb high enough to get over the rising land.
