Table Rock is a small, unincorporated community in Jackson County, Oregon, United States. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. It's located close to the Rogue River, along a road called Table Rock Road. You can find it between the areas of White City and Sams Valley.

Discovering Table Rock, Oregon

The community of Table Rock gets its name from two cool natural landmarks nearby. These are called Upper and Lower Table Rock. They are large, flat-topped hills, almost like giant tables. These "table rocks" are just a little bit west of where the community is located.

A Look at Its History

Between 1853 and 1856, an important historical area was located near Upper Table Rock. This was the Table Rock Indian Reservation. It was a special area set aside for Native American tribes. The reservation was situated between Upper Table Rock and Evans Creek, which is a stream that flows into the Rogue River.

The Post Office Story

A post office named Table Rock used to operate in this area. It was open from 1872 to 1895. This was a place where people could send and receive mail. In 1895, the postal service changed the name of the office to Tablerock.

Changes Over Time

The Tablerock post office continued to operate until 1906. During these years, it moved to different spots in the valley. These locations were always near the two large, flat-topped hills, or mesas, which are about 1,000-foot (300 m) tall. Thomas Gianini was the very first postmaster for this area.

Trains and Transportation

In 1949, a train company called the Southern Pacific opened a station here. It was also named Table Rock. This station was part of their Siskiyou Line, which ran between Eugene in Oregon and Black Butte, California in California.

Another Railway Line

This train station was located about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) north of Central Point. Another railway, the Pacific and Eastern Railway, also had a Table Rock station near White City. This railway used to be known as the Medford and Crater Lake Railroad. It operated on about 34 miles (55 km) of track, connecting Medford to Butte Falls.
