The Story of Taco Bueno
How Taco Bueno Started
Taco Bueno was started in 1967 by a person named Bill R. Waugh. He was an art graduate from Abilene Christian University. The very first Taco Bueno restaurant opened its doors in Abilene, Texas.
Changes in Ownership
Over the years, Taco Bueno has been owned by different companies. In 1981, a British food company called Unigate bought Taco Bueno. Later, in 1996, Taco Bueno was sold to CKE Restaurants, which is known for Carl's Jr..
In 2001, a group of investors called Jacobson Partners bought the chain. This helped CKE Restaurants with some financial challenges. Then, in 2005, another company, Palladium Equity Partners, purchased Taco Bueno.
New Leaders and Growth
Along with new owners, Taco Bueno also saw new leaders. John Miller became the CEO in 2005. Later, Ed Lambert took over as CEO in 2011, followed by Mike Roper in 2015.
In 2015, Taco Bueno started working with the mobile app Tapingo. This allowed customers to get their food delivered for the first time.
In late 2015, TPG Growth, a part of the company TPG Capital, bought Taco Bueno.

Recent Changes and Future
In April 2018, Omar Janjua became the new CEO of Taco Bueno. Later that year, in November 2018, Taco Bueno went through a process to reorganize its business. This allowed the company to keep operating.
At the same time, a company called Sun Holdings agreed to buy Taco Bueno. Sun Holdings already owned many other fast-food restaurants. An associated company, Taco Supremo, helped Taco Bueno with its finances. This allowed Taco Bueno to get back on track. By January 15, 2019, Taco Bueno had successfully reorganized its business.
In June 2020, Taco Bueno opened its first restaurant in the Houston area, specifically in Katy. This happened during the COVID-19 pandemic.
