Taft is a small, unincorporated community located in Grand Lake Township, within Saint Louis County, Minnesota, United States. An unincorporated community is a place that does not have its own local government. It is part of a larger county or township.

History of Taft
How Taft Got Its Name
The community of Taft was named after a famous person! It got its name from William Howard Taft. He was a former President of the United States. He served as president from 1909 to 1913.
Taft's Role in Railroad History
Long ago, Taft was an important stop for trains. It was a "water stop" for trains traveling on the old Northeastern Railway in Saint Louis County. Trains back then needed to stop often to refill their steam engines with water.
Even though many years have passed, you can still see signs of its past. Buildings like the old train station (Depot), a schoolhouse, and a house for railroad workers are no longer there. But their old locations can still be found.
Close to Taft, across the Ush-kab-wan River, there used to be another community called Crysler. However, Crysler no longer exists today.
