What's in a Name?
The province gets its name from a place called Pampa del Tamarugal. This name is very important to the area.
There are a few ways people say its name in Spanish:
- Provincia de Tamarugal: This is how the local government uses the name.
- Provincia del Tamarugal: This is often used by the government of Chile. It comes from the name "El Tamarugal."
- Provincia El Tamarugal: Another way to say it, also from "El Tamarugal."
Geography and People
Tamarugal Province is very large. It covers about 39,390.5 square kilometers (about 15,209 square miles). This makes it the seventh largest province in Chile.
In 2002, about 22,531 people lived here. There were more men (14,175) than women (8,356). The province does not have many people living in it compared to its size. This means it has a low population density. Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living here grew by a lot, about 63.5%.
How Tamarugal Province is Governed
A special person called a Presidential Provincial Delegate runs the province. This person is chosen by the President of Chile.
Currently, Luz Eliana González Millas is the delegate. She was chosen by President Gabriel Boric.
Towns and Communities
Tamarugal Province is divided into five smaller areas called communes (comunas). Think of them like smaller towns or districts within the province.
The five communes are:
- Pozo Almonte: This is the capital city of the province.
- Pica
- Huara
- Colchane
- Camiña
