Colchane is a small village and commune (which is like a local government area) located in Chile. It's found in the Tamarugal Province within the Tarapacá Region.
Colchane is high up in the Andes mountains, in a flat area called the altiplano. It's right next to the border with Bolivia. The commune also includes other small places like Isluga, Enquelga, Cariquima, and Chijo.
People and Life in Colchane
In 2002, a count of the people (called a census) showed that Colchane had 1,649 residents. Out of these, 910 were men and 739 were women.
Colchane is a completely rural place, meaning there are no big cities or towns there. Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in Colchane grew by 5.7%, which was an increase of 94 people.
How Colchane is Governed
As a commune, Colchane is a local government area in Chile. It is managed by a municipal council. This council is led by an alcalde (which means mayor). The alcalde is chosen directly by the people every four years.
Colchane is part of a larger area for elections.
- In the Chamber of Deputies (one part of Chile's parliament), Colchane is represented by people from the entire Tarapacá Region.
- In the Senate (the other part of Chile's parliament), Colchane is represented by people from the Arica and Parinacota Region and the Tarapacá Region.
