Pozo Almonte (pronounced "POH-soh ahl-MOHN-tay") is a city and a special area called a commune in Chile. It's located in the middle of the dry Atacama Desert. Since 2007, Pozo Almonte has been the capital city of Tamarugal Province.
The city is about 52 kilometers (32 miles) away from Iquique, which is the capital of the Tarapacá Region. More than 15,000 people live in Pozo Almonte. The commune covers a large area of about 13,766 square kilometers (5,315 sq mi). It shares borders with several other communes like Iquique, Alto Hospicio, Huara, Pica, María Elena, and Tocopilla.

Who Lives in Pozo Almonte?
In 2017, a census (a count of all people) was done by the National Statistics Institute. It showed that Pozo Almonte had 15,711 residents. Out of these, 8,987 were men and 6,724 were women.
Between 2002 and 2017, the number of people living in Pozo Almonte grew quite a lot. The population increased by 45%, which means 4,881 more people moved there during that time.
How Pozo Almonte is Governed
As a commune, Pozo Almonte is a local government area in Chile. It is managed by a municipal council. This council is led by an alcalde, who is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen directly by the people in an election every four years.
Pozo Almonte is part of a larger area for elections. In the Chamber of Deputies (similar to a house of representatives), Pozo Almonte is represented by two members. These members are elected as part of the 2nd electoral district, which covers the entire Tarapacá Region.
For the Senate (another part of the government), Pozo Almonte is part of the 1st senatorial area. This area includes both the Arica and Parinacota Region and the Tarapacá Region.
Weather and Climate in Pozo Almonte
Pozo Almonte is located in a desert, so it has a very dry climate. This type of climate is known as a cold desert climate (BWk). This means it's generally hot during the day and can get quite cool at night, especially in winter. Rain is very rare here.
