Tami Lynn, whose real name was Gloria Jean Brown, was an American soul singer. She was born on January 25, 1939, and passed away on June 26, 2020. Tami Lynn became famous in 1971 when her song "I'm Gonna Run Away From You" became a Top Ten hit in the UK.
Becoming a Singer
Gloria Brown grew up in Gert Town, New Orleans, Louisiana. She went to school with famous musicians like Allen Toussaint and Ellis Marsalis Jr.. Gloria loved to sing from a young age. She sang in church choirs and even performed in a school play called Show Boat.
She also sang gospel music on local radio shows. One day, she filled in for a singer who couldn't make it. A local musician named Alvin "Red" Tyler discovered her talent. Soon, she started performing rhythm and blues songs in clubs around her hometown.
Gloria chose the stage name Tami Lynn. She met Allen Toussaint and Harold Battiste, who helped her sign with AFO Records. Tami Lynn then toured with other artists from the record company. She also performed in New York City, opening shows for music legends like John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Ella Fitzgerald.
Music Career Highlights
In 1965, a record executive named Jerry Wexler heard Tami Lynn sing. He had her record a song called "I'm Gonna Run Away From You." This song was written and produced by Bert Berns. Even though it wasn't released right away in the US, it came out in the UK.
In 1971, "I'm Gonna Run Away From You" was released as a single in the UK. It became a huge hit, especially with fans of a music style called Northern soul. This song reached number 4 on the UK Singles Chart!
After her song became popular, Tami Lynn released a full album in 1972 called Love Is Here and Now You're Gone. This album was re-released on CD in 2005.
Working with Other Artists
Tami Lynn often worked as a backup singer for other musicians. She sang on many albums for the famous artist Dr. John. He even helped her connect with the Rolling Stones, and she sang on their album Exile on Main St..
She also recorded music with artists like King Floyd, Wilson Pickett, and Sonny & Cher. Tami Lynn performed live with many other musicians, including Miles Davis, Irma Thomas, and Joe Cocker.
In 1975, "I'm Gonna Run Away From You" became a hit again in the UK, reaching number 36 on the charts. After this success, Tami Lynn toured with Dr. John. She released another album in 1992 called Tamiya Lynn, which featured funk music. In 2008, she performed at a music festival called the Ponderosa Stomp.
Tami Lynn lived in New York City for many years before moving to Florida. She continued to perform, and in 2014, she gave a concert in New Port Richey, Florida. Tami Lynn passed away in Florida on June 26, 2020.
