The Story of Tapatío
The Tapatío Hot Sauce company began in 1971. Jose-Luis Saavedra Sr. started it in a small warehouse. This first location was in Maywood, California.
Growing the Business
In 1985, the company needed more space. They moved to a bigger factory in Vernon, California. This new place was about 5 miles (8.0 km) from Downtown Los Angeles. Even though it was larger, it still had some challenges. For example, it only had one loading dock. This made it hard to move products in and out.
A New Home
After a long search, Tapatío found the perfect spot. They had a new, much larger factory built just for them. This factory is where Tapatío hot sauce is made today.
What's in Tapatío Sauce?
Tapatío hot sauce is made with a few simple ingredients. These include water, red peppers, salt, spices, garlic, and acetic acid. It also contains xanthan gum and sodium benzoate. Sodium benzoate is a preservative that helps keep the sauce fresh.
Sauce Sizes and Spice Level
You can buy Tapatío in different sizes. These include small bottles (5, 10, and 32 U.S. fluid ounces) and a large 1 U.S. gallon (3.8 liters) size. They even have tiny 1⁄4-ounce (7 g) packets.
Tapatío has a Scoville scale rating of 3,000. The Scoville scale measures how spicy something is. This means Tapatío is spicier than some other sauces, like Sriracha.
The Slogan
The company's slogan is "Es una salsa ... Muy salsa!" This means "It's a sauce... Very saucy!"
Other Tapatío Products
Tapatío has teamed up with other brands to create new products.
Snacks and Noodles
In 2011, Frito-Lay released special Tapatío-flavored snacks. These included Doritos, Ruffles, and Fritos. In 2018, Tapatío Ramen noodles were introduced.
Special Editions
In 2021, Tapatío celebrated its 50th anniversary. To mark this special occasion, they worked with comedian Gabriel Iglesias. They released a special edition hot sauce called Tapatío X Fluffy.
