Tapatío is a popular American hot sauce. It is made in Vernon, California. Many people in the United States, especially Mexican-American families, love this sauce.
The name "Tapatío" comes from a special word. This word describes people from Guadalajara, Jalisco, a city in Mexico. The family who started the company came from Guadalajara. Tapatío hot sauce is also sold in other countries. These include Mexico, Canada, Central America, and Australia.
How Tapatío Hot Sauce Started
The Tapatío Hot Sauce company began in 1971. Jose-Luis Saavedra Sr. started it in a small warehouse. This first building was in Maywood, California. It was about 750 square feet (70 square meters) in size.
In 1985, the company needed more space. They moved to a bigger factory in Vernon, California. This new place was about 8,500 square feet (790 square meters). It was about 5 miles (8 kilometers) from Downtown Los Angeles. Even this new factory became too small. It had only one loading dock and not enough storage.
After a long search, the company found a perfect spot. They had a new, custom-built factory made just for them. This factory is much larger, about 30,000 square feet (2,800 square meters). Tapatío still uses this factory today.
What's in Tapatío Hot Sauce?
The ingredients in Tapatío hot sauce are listed on its label. They include water, red peppers, salt, spices, garlic, and acetic acid. It also has xanthan gum and sodium benzoate. Sodium benzoate is a preservative that helps keep the sauce fresh.
Tapatío hot sauce comes in different sizes. You can find it in 5, 10, and 32 fluid ounce bottles. There is also a large 1-gallon (3.8 liter) size. Small 1⁄4-ounce (7 gram) packets are also available.
The sauce has a Scoville heat scale rating of 3,000. This means it is hotter than some other popular sauces like Sriracha.
The company's slogan for the sauce is "Es una salsa ... Muy salsa!" This means "It's a sauce... Very saucy!"
