Tappan Lake, also known as Tappan Reservoir, is a large lake located in Harrison County, Ohio, in the United States. It is a popular spot for outdoor activities like boating and fishing. The lake was created to help manage water and prevent floods in the region.

Discover Tappan Lake

Tappan Lake is a special kind of lake called a reservoir. This means it's an artificial lake, built by people to store water. It covers a huge area of water and is surrounded by lots of land.

Size and Location

The lake itself covers about 2,350 acres (9.5 km2) of water. There are also 5,000 acres (20 km2) of land around it. This land is part of the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District. This district helps manage the lake and its surrounding areas.

The normal water level of the lake is about 899.3 ft (274.1 m) above sea level. Tappan Lake is located between the towns of Cadiz and Dennison.

Boating and Access

If you like boating, Tappan Lake is a great place to visit! Boats on the lake have a limit of 399 horsepower (298 kW) for their engines. This helps keep the lake safe and enjoyable for everyone.

There are several places where you can launch your boat. Two public ramps are available for everyone to use. One is close to a rest area on U.S. Route 250. The other is right across from the Tappan Marina. There's also a third boat ramp located inside Tappan Lake Park.

Traveling Along the Lake

U.S. Route 250 is a major road that follows Tappan Lake for several miles. As you drive, you'll cross a series of special bridges called causeways. These causeways were built when the lake was created in the 1930s. They allow the road to go right over parts of the water.

A Lake with a History

Tappan Lake got its name from a community that used to be there. The former town of Tappan was covered by water when the lake was finished in 1938. Another old town, Laceyville, also lies beneath the lake's waters. It's interesting to think about the history hidden below the surface!
