Tarla Dalal (born June 3, 1936 – died November 6, 2013) was a very famous Indian food writer, chef, and author of cookbooks. She also hosted popular cooking shows. Her first cookbook, The Pleasures of Vegetarian Cooking, came out in 1974.
Tarla Dalal wrote over 100 books and sold more than 10 million copies. She also ran the biggest Indian food website and published a magazine called Cooking & More. Her TV shows included The Tarla Dalal Show and Cook It Up With Tarla Dalal. Her recipes were printed in about 25 magazines and used in many Indian homes.
She was known for her Indian cuisine, especially Gujarati cuisine. She also wrote about many other types of food and healthy cooking. In 2007, the Government of India gave her the Padma Shri award. This is a very high honor, and she was the only Indian chef to receive it. In 2005, she was also named Woman of the Year by the Indian Merchants' Chamber.
Early Life and Beginnings
Tarla Dalal was born and grew up in Pune, Maharashtra, India. In 1960, she married Nalin Dalal and moved to Mumbai.
She started teaching cooking classes from her home in 1966. These classes became very popular. This led to her first cookbook, The Pleasures of Vegetarian Cooking, being published in 1974. This book alone sold over 1.5 million copies!
A Chef's Amazing Career
As time went on, Tarla Dalal became a household name. Many people, from home cooks to professional chefs, trusted and loved her recipes.
She is famous for bringing new and foreign foods to India. She created vegetarian versions of many dishes from other countries. Tarla Dalal changed the cooking world in India and became the best-selling cookbook author in the country.
Her books were translated into many languages. These included Dutch, Russian, Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, and Bengali. She also published her own cooking magazines. In 2007, she started a special cookbook series called 'Total Health Series'.
Her line of ready-to-cook mixes, called Tarla Dalal Mixes, was bought by a company called International Bestfoods Ltd. in 2000.
Personal Life
Tarla Dalal had three children: Sanjay, Deepak, and Renu. Her husband, Nalin, passed away in 2005. She lived in an apartment in South Mumbai.
Tarla Dalal died on November 6, 2013, after having a heart attack.
